Cars for Cigar Smokers! The Cigar Guys are infamous for their road trips, regularly covering 100 miles or more and visiting as many as four cigar shops per day. And because we are fortunate enough to live in SoCal with its’ wonderful freeway system, we spend a lot of time smoking in the car. Many of our readers share the simple enjoyment of puffing along while driving, but what’s the best car for the avid cigar aficionado? Surely it’s something with some comfort, enough space for you and a friend or two, a fair dose of style and, maybe, a bit of power.
Infiniti QX56
This is Infiniti’s version of the full-size Armada SUV. Built on the same frame as the Titan pick-up truck, this barge is as big as anyone could ever need. With seating for 7, including second-row captain’s chairs, there is plenty of room for you and your smoking or golf buddies. And with a powerful V8, the Infiniti has class-leading acceleration. If you need to tow a boat or transport a bunch of claustrophobic people, this is the vehicle to take. Highs- spacious, plenty of room for 26” rims and a fair bit of factory bling. Lows- being eye-to-eye with soccer moms driving the same vehicle.
BMW 335i convertible The saying about engines used to be “there’s no replacement for displacement”, but the boys at the Bavarian Motor Works seem bound and determined to buck tradition. A 3 liter inline-6 cylinder engine is always a good place to start for a performance-based car, but bolting a pair of unevenly sized turbo chargers work to transform a smooth engine into a powerhouse. With 300hp and 300lb ft of torque, this car matches the previous generation’s M3 version in terms of performance and acceleration. And the new hardtop convertible means never having to worry about hot-boxing your non-smoking friend. Highs- tremendous acceleration, unlimited headroom Lows- you know the difference between BMWs and porcupines, right?
Lamborghini Murcielago Spyder
This bull has some real horns to go with its’ snort. Lambos have always turned heads, but now they’ll be looking at you since you’ll never put the roof on. There’s a little sticker on it that advises against exceeding 120mph or the flimsy top will tear off. And 120 is about 3rd gear. With a huge 12 cylinder engine throbbing behind your head the sound system is pretty much moot, as if you’d ever want to listen to anything else. And with all-wheel drive and an impossibly wide stance, you probably couldn’t hear it over your passenger screaming anyway. Highs- batmobile styling, more power than you need, chick magnet. Lows- could have had 6 corvettes, your ash will wind up in the engine intakes
Cadillac CTS The former world standard had been in a cash-crunch over the last few years, but the new “Arts and Sciences” design language is beginning to pay dividends. The second-generation CTS does its’ best to punch above its’ weight. The body style is less love-it-or-leave-it than the old model, and the chassis has made similar gains. With a rear-wheel drive design and a brand new direct-injection V6 engine, the caddy is no longer just for gangsters. And GM is really poised to shake up the segment when they put their brand-new supercharged V8 under the hood. With 550hp, the CTS-V will be trolling for M5’s and E63’s this summer. Highs- brand new engine choices, comfortable ride, stand-out looks Lows- not as prestigious as Mercedes, GM electronics
Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe
Extremely large, unbelievably heavy, extraordinarily powerful and unrealistically expensive, the new Roller is all these and more. With options like a teak deck over the convertible top cover, you’re guaranteed to exceed the base price. Does your wife have a favorite shade of lipstick? They’ll dye the leather to match. Want a stainless steel hood? It’s all yours. The only bits you can’t really fool around with are the twin-turbo 12 cylinder engine that propels this nearly 3 ton barge from 0-60 in under 5 seconds, and the cool suicide doors. You might not want to ash in this car though- that burn hole might cost more to fix than your mortgage payment. Highs- style, power, comfort, style, exclusivity and style Lows- you spent how much?
In the American culture, cars are as much a fashion statement and piece of clothing as they are transportation. What you drive says something about you, just like what you smoke. But don’t be too quick to judge- more millionaires in this country drive F-150’s than any other vehicle. So maybe the next time you see a guy in a Jeep Wrangler with no roof and no doors puffing on a stogie, maybe it’s because he sees this 4×4 as the ultimate open-air driving and smoking experience.

| | | The Cigar Guys Cigar Shops of the Month! LA County Tobacco Leaf Cigars (San Pedro, CA) Some cigar shops focus their attention on quality cigars, some on great atmosphere, some on in-lounge entertainment and some on location, but few manage to touch all the bases. Located in San Pedro a stone’s throw from Trump National Golf course is The Tobacco Leaf – from the street you see the large sign and a number of cigarette posters which would at first deter the dedicated cigar smoker. But once you walk in and take a look around, you know you’re in a quality business. The owner, Nick Baracat, keeps his bookcase-style humidors full to bursting with nearly every quality cigar on the market, and all at cut-throat prices. Accessories abound- desk and travel humidors, lighters, cutters, and various cigar toys fill the display shelves, and many hookah and assorted pipe supplies are also avaliable.
The lounge area is intimate and comfortable, with a sliver of ocean view, the Palos Verdes hillside and a busy intersection outside to watch traffic go by. The patio outside has plenty of seating and is a wonderful place to hang out after the sun goes down. Nick stays open until 1am on Friday and Saturday, so it’s a good place to unwind after a night out. Regular hours are Monday – Thursday, 10 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 1 am and Sunday 11 am to 9 pm. A successful businessman in his own right, Nick is an approachable conversationalist and a gracious and attentive host who’s always ready with water, soda or excellent turkish coffee. The smoking crowd is friendly and talkative, and you never know who you’ll run into. All in all, it’s a small jewel on the ocean.
Tobacco Leaf is located next door to Starbucks at 2470 South Western Avenue, San Pedro, CA.
Orange County, CA Orange County Cigars (Costa Mesa, CA) Bart Gabriel and his friends, John Gleason & Chris McDonald, had the dream of opening a world-class cigar shop in Costa Mesa. They had envisioned large TV’s, lots of seating and a few special touches of their own. But they were dead-set on one thing in particular- a stand-alone location. And deep in Orange County free-standing retail space is difficult to come by. So they waited. And waited. In early 2008 they finally took their shot, and they made sure that they hit their target. The Orange County Cigars Lounge is a model of interior design, comfort, and style. As you walk in, the humidor is on your right, boasting a large selection at good prices.
The front lounge is cozy, with a half-dozen seats arranged facing a 50” TV. But the real draw of the shop is the back lounge. Walk past the counter and you’re in the 800 sq ft main lounge- large leather chairs, a roll-door for events in the summer and a massive 60” flat screen TV make this a very comfortable place to be. And the industrial ventilation system makes sure that every room in the shop is free and clear of excess smoke in the air. This is a great shop to watch a movie in, or have an event in the summer. The patio and roll-open door are made for BBQ’s! Orange County Cigars Lounge is located at 2470 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa, CA
